It seems Spin New York, the private ping pong club on 23rd Street and Park Avenue South in Manhattan, is having some legal troubles. Bill Mack and Iwona Herdzik, two of the main investors and owners, have filed a suit against the other owners of Spin New York. The suit claims that Franck Raharinosy, Johnathan Bricklin, Andrew Gordon and Susan Sarandon have frozen Mack and Herdzik out of the business, are mismanaging finances, and issued shares of the company to third parties without their approval.
Rumor has it, that Spin Los Angeles is due to open this spring. It’s possible that the opening will be delayed because of the legal battle. And, what about Spin New York--will it make it to the one year mark?
While Spin New York may be designed for models, celebrities and investment bankers more than your working or middle class table tennis player, the Spin crew is doing an excellent job of promoting table tennis in the States. They’ve helped kids with a talent for the sport and, supported professional players with events and coaching opportunities. I think they could have built a nicer club for the same amount of money in a lower rent district or a slightly scaled down version in the same location. Either way it's a very expensive place to play. I guess players like me will have to stick to playing at the New York Recreation Center, Pong, and other cheaper, community-oriented clubs —which isn’t so bad!
