Art-Star Ping-Pong at the BND Galleria from Milan at Arte Fiera 2009 by The Blue Noses.
As far as I know, none of the artists in Blue Noses’ installations actually play or played ping pong, but intriguing artwork all the same.Founded in 1999 by Vicheslav Mizin and Alexander Shaburov, the Blue Noses Group is a Dada inspired Russian group. Participants in addition to Viacheslav Mizin and Alexander Shaburov include Konstantin Skotnikov, Dmitry Bulnygin, and Maxim Zonov. Often accused of being recklessly tasteless, these Russian pranksters mock celebrity, religious and political icons through performance, collage, and other mixed media. While I do like a good trickster, I am not a huge fan of their work as a whole, as I think it lacks subtlety and sophistication, is sometime sexist, and the juvenile jokes get old quickly. I do, however, like "Art Star Ping Pong" for the obvious reason--the ping pong angle--and for its figurative and literal hit to the faces of stars of the art world. I wouldn't mind whacking a ping pong ball into Jeff Koons' face, both a fun and artistic activity.
In 2006, White Box gallery here in New York, had a Blue Noses exhibit tilted, "Russia 2: Bad News From Russia." Information on the exhibit and a CV of the group can be found here.
